Hello - The clarity and lightness of New Mexico’s atmosphere is certainly a contrast to the palpable weight of Kansas City’s. That is one of the reasons we venture there loaded with clothes every summer. The other reasons include a spacious landscape, a rich and civilized history, and food. We did our best to break new ground in the last category.
The two newest discoveries were the excellence of Bobcat Bite (hamburger on the highway), and the delicious olive oil at Nomad (we bought a gallon). Old favorites re-visited were Pasquals (breakfast and lunch are best), Coyote Cafe (onion rings), Santa Cafe (right across the street from our rented house), Sage Bakery (breakfast), Downtown Subscription (coffee, newspaper, magazines and 2 great bookstores next door). Our first stop is always Whole Foods to stock the larder.
This weekend to East Hampton, and a benefit 5-hour trunk show for the Nature Conservancy on Sunday. Hope to see you all soon somewhere.

A quick report from our California trunk show trip. We had plenty of opportunity for good eating in both Northern and Southern California.
No place is as food obsessed as the Bay Area, and delicious things abound. We ate at the following places: Zuni, Tacubaya, Cortez, and Town Hall. Only the last was a disappointment. Smaller bites were delicious at Tartine, Boulangerie on Polk Street, Chinese take out duck and chicken at New Moon on Stockton, and Scharfenberger’s Cafe Cacao in Bereley.
Saturday’s pleasure was shopping at the Farmers’ Market at the Ferry Building (peaches, figs, pluots, cowboy steaks, cheese and lemon tart), and cooking it all up at Fifi’s house in Berkeley.
Our best meal in LA was at AOC — lots of small plates all delicious. We also finally drove out to San Gabriel, and some real Chinese food at Hui Bin (red-cooked fish tail, salt and pepper shrimp, pea shoots, clams with black beans and green onion pancakes). We will have to go back to the neighborhood and find more places next time. We had a lovely breakfast at Pain Quotidien on the porch. We need more recommendations for good low-down real ethnic eating in these culinary paradises.
As for shopping, we love deVera and Japonesque in San Francisco — deVera is also at one Crosby Street in NYC.
